LECTURE 1 – BASIC CONCEPTS OF CHEST X-RAY
1: Importance of Observation
Careful observation is essential
Helps in understanding details clearly
If you don’t observe properly, you are likely to forget important points
2: Memory & Retention
Not noting things can lead to forgetting
Active attention improves memory
Repetition and review help retain information
3: Technical Quality of Film
Always evaluate the technical aspects. Key factors include:
– Clarity of visuals
– Sound quality
– Lighting and framing
4: Visual Analysis
Observe scenes carefully. Pay attention to:
– Composition
– Background elements
– Gestures and expressions
5: Conclusion
Observation + analysis = better understanding
Technical evaluation is important in film study
Consistent practice improves skills
6: Key Idea
– Chest X-ray = black & white image
– Abnormalities fall into 4 basic categories: Types of Abnormalities
1.In the wrong place (displacement)
2.Too white (↑ opacity)
3.Too black (↑ lucency)
4.Too large (enlargement)
7: Stepwise Approach to Reading X-ray
i. Check patient details – Name & Date
ii. Check technical quality – (Assessment of projection) Orientation – Rotation – Penetration – Inspiration
iii. Systematic Scanning –
Examine entire film carefully
Mentally list all abnormalities
Don’t stop early after first finding
Avoid missing additional findings
iv. Localize the Abnormality – Identify where the lesion is:
Chest wall – Pleura – Lung – Mediastinum
v. Describe the Abnormality Classify into one of four:
Too white – Too black – Too large – Wrong position
vi. Clinical Correlation (Very Important)
* Questions to Ask:
Is it too white?
Is it too black?
Is it too big?
Is it in the wrong place?
